Can Air Duct Cleaning Help With Allergies? An Honest Answer

Duct cleaning isn't an allergy cure, but in some homes it makes a real difference. Here's how to tell whether your ducts are part of the problem.

People ask us this a lot, usually in the fall when the heat comes on and someone in the house starts sneezing more. The honest answer is: sometimes, and it depends on what's actually in your ducts.

What duct cleaning won't do

Duct cleaning isn't an allergy treatment. Most of the dust, pollen and pet dander in a home comes from everyday life, and it comes back no matter how clean the ducts are. The EPA doesn't recommend routine duct cleaning as a health measure on its own, and we'd rather tell you that up front than sell you a cleaning you don't need.

When it can make a real difference

The same EPA guidance does say cleaning makes sense when there's a clear reason inside the system. In our experience, those are also the homes where allergy sufferers notice a change:

  • Dust blowing out of the vents. If you see a puff of dust when the system starts, or the registers get gray fast, there's buildup the air is pushing straight into your rooms.
  • Visible mold or a musty smell. Mold spores are a common trigger, and growth inside ductwork won't go away with a new filter.
  • Signs of mice or insects. Droppings and nesting material in ducts are allergens on their own.
  • After a renovation. Drywall and sawdust settle into ducts during a project and keep circulating for months afterward.
  • An older home with an unknown history. If you just moved in and have no idea when the ducts were last cleaned, it's worth having them looked at.

What helps either way

Whether or not you clean the ducts, a good filter changed on schedule does more for allergies than almost anything else in your HVAC system. Check it monthly during heating season. Keeping indoor humidity in a comfortable range also helps, since dust mites and mold both do better in damp air.
